Why Your Gel Keeps Lifting — It's Not Just the Technique

Your gel longevity depends on more than the nail tech. Learn how your nail type and skin condition affect how long gel lasts, and how MEIKA tailors each treatment.

"My last gel set lifted within days…" "My friend's gel lasts a month, but mine never does…"

The truth is, how long gel nails last depends on more than the technician's skill. Your own nail type and skin condition play a huge role.

At Nail Salon MEIKA, we don't simply apply gel — we adjust the technique to suit each client's nail condition.

Here's a closer look at why gel lifts, and how it relates to your nail type.

Your skin tells us a lot about gel longevity

Skin and nails are deeply connected.

People with soft, moist skin

  • Soft skin
  • High moisture content
  • Thin, soft nails
  • Minimal cuticle build-up

This nail type tends to lift gel more easily.

Especially if you:

  • do a lot of wet work
  • sweat easily on your hands
  • have soft, flexible nails

…gel can struggle to stay bonded to the nail plate.

What helps

For this nail type, simply replacing the gel is not enough. The key is consistent nail care to strengthen the nail itself over time.

With regular care, you can expect:

  • nails that resist breaking
  • improved thickness
  • more stable gel adhesion

We also recommend fill-in (infill) treatments instead of full acetone soak-offs every visit, to minimise stress on the nail.

People with drier skin

  • Skin that gets flaky
  • Harder, thicker nails
  • Heavier cuticle build-up

This type generally holds gel well.

However, if the cuticles and dead skin are left untouched before applying gel:

  • the base of the nail can look lifted
  • nails look untidy as they grow out
  • the hands look dry overall

What helps

For this type, the essentials are:

  • careful cuticle care
  • hand cream
  • nail oil

Hydrated hands make any nail design look several times more beautiful.

The key to long-lasting gel: knowing your own nails

If your gel lifts quickly, it does not mean gel "doesn't work" for you.

What matters is matching the treatment to your:

  • nail type
  • skin condition
  • lifestyle

At MEIKA, we tailor every part of the visit — from base gel choice, to care method, to whether to fill in or soak off, to hydration advice — to the person in the chair.

"My gel keeps lifting." "I want to grow healthier nails." "I want to find the right approach for me."

If any of that sounds like you, please reach out — we're happy to talk it through.
